Los Angeles Hardwood Flooring Repairs ...for those damaged areas

A good percentage of the houses in Los Angeles we work in have damage that needs repairing. It could be from pet urine or over-watered plant pots that have stained the floorboards black, walls being removed and now there are sections of flooring missing, or chipped, gouged, cupped sections—any kind of damage.

We can fix all of these issues when we work on your hardwood floor refinishing project.

Whatever repairs are needed, we have years of experience and all the tools and skills required. We can replace damaged sections and seamlessly blend them into the floor so they look completely original—nobody will ever know they were there.

Please note we do not offer a stand-alone repair or touch-up service. Our repair service is for floors where we are sanding and refinishing the entire floor.

Or you've removed a closet and need the empty space filled in with flooring. We can help you with that, as well as finding matching flooring so the old wood blends in perfectly with the new wood flooring.

Another common wood floor repair we come across in older homes is pet damage (urine stains) and water damage, such as plant pots being over-watered.

We can replace damaged flooring of any size or location, using the same type, grade, size, and milling of wood so there’s as close as possible to a perfect match with the rest of the floor. We can even match together rooms that had no hardwood flooring, giving your entire home a seamless feel.

Once those new areas have been sanded and stained, and the finish is applied, they will look as if they had always been there.

1 - Lack of Finish Carpentry Skills

Another mistake we see is bad carpentry skills. If only a square hole is cut out—which is much easier—rather than staggering (we call it “lacing in”) the boards, then you'll have a very unprofessional result. Lacing in requires a lot more work and time... but the result will be an invisible and seamless repair that you will never notice.

Below is an example of a bad repair. No amount of filler or sanding will make this repair unnoticeable...

2 - Using the Wrong Type of Wood

The most common repair mistake we see is people using the wrong type of wood. Typically, this happens with red and white oak repairs. To an untrained eye, the two woods look very similar, and unfinished they do look quite similar. Once the finish is applied, though, the difference is extremely noticeable.

It's also easy for unskilled contractors to mix up the milling types and flooring grades. The three most common millings are Plain Sawn, Quarter Sawn and Rift Sawn. All of them look very different from each other. The same goes for grades like “select grade” and “No. 2 common grade.” If either of these are mixed up in a repair, it will be very noticeable no matter how well the repair is done.

We only do repairs as part of a full hardwood floor restoration. We will need to come out and take a look at the section of flooring so we can see what the damage is and what is needed to fix it. Usually we do this as part of your in-home estimate.
